Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

BPPV

"An injury is not just a process of recovery it's a process of discovery."

BPPV is one of the most common causes of vertigo, and typically occurs in people aged 50 and older, but can occur at any age.

The signs and symptoms of BPPV vary from person to person, but are almost always brought on by a change in head position. Such as rolling over or sitting up in bed, standing from sitting, and walking.

Symptoms come and go and commonly last less than one minute. Episodes of BPPV can disappear for weeks to months at a time and then recur.

Symptoms of BPPV:

BPPV is a condition of the inner ear

Inside the ear are three loop-shaped structures, called the semicircular canals. These canals have tiny hairs known as cilla, which control balance. BPPV develops when calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia), become dislodged and trapped within the semicircular canals.

With certain head movements, the otoconia moves and stimulates the cilia. They transmit information about balance to the brain and cause dizziness and vertigo.

Treating BPPV

The Epley Manoeuvre is performed for the treatment of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

The manoeuvre is a series of head movements, performed in a specific order, designed to relocate the calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia).

The manoeuvre is a safe and effective method, which normally resolves symptoms immediately.

The Epley manoeuvre should only be performed by trained medical professionals.

Here at KP Chiropractic, we have undertaken extensive training to ensure safe and accurate diagnosis of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, and the Epley Manoeuvre.
